60 years of hassle for 7 km of freeway

Vroom Foundation Technology has produced around 1500 of the net total of 3500 cast-in-situ vibro piles for the construction of the A4 Delft – Schiedam. Rijkswaterstaat is working on a fitting integration for this new freeway. The contractor combination A4ALL, a cooperation between Boskalis, Heijmans and Volker-Wessels, is responsible for the construction of the new 7 km freeway.

The construction of the freeway has a long history: the first plan dates from 1953. “This small stretch of road was tormented by slow political decision-making, conflicting regulations and protracted procedures. The average decision time was cut in half; we will now go from plan to finish in seven years,” Secretary Schultz van Haegen said at the start of the project. With the new freeway, the following will be accomplished:

- better accessibility between Rotterdam and The Hague

- less traffic jams on the Delft, Midden-Delfland, Lansingerland and Westland freeway (A13)

The photos have been made available by Heijmans’ Martijn de Krijger.
