Foundation Torqued Arch piece of artwork

Utrecht’s train station area is undergoing a thorough transformation. Part of this transformation is the Torqued Arch piece of artwork. We have been selected by the Fentener van Vlissingen Fonds to realize the complete foundation for this enormous piece of artwork situated on one of the busiest spots of The Netherlands.

The piece of artwork will be built onto two concrete foundation blocks supported by drilled steel tubular piles with grout injection. The concrete foundation blocks measure 2x3x4 m and will be poured on-site.

Arch sculpture

The renewals will radically change the city on a large scale. Against that background and with reference its 50th birthday, the agency of Gijs van Vaerenbergh was selected by the Fentener van Vlissingen Fonds to design a public piece of artwork. The result is an arch sculpture spanning the Mariaplaatsbrug melting history and renewal together in a characteristic way.

The design

As the sculpture will be built diagonally above the bridge, it serves the axis of the bridge as well as the axis of the water resulting into two ports within one move. In addition, the two bottoms of the arch will be placed within a corner of 90° in relation to each other resulting into the arch constantly displaying different designs from several directions. In length and in a diagonal direction, the arch evolves from a surface into a line. The used rotation is not only interesting in terms of shape, also in terms of structure, it is beneficial: as a result of the corner rotation on the bottom, a torque arises inside the arch causing the whole to be stiffer so that thinner layers can be built upon them. Alongside the inner part, the arch will be finished off with reflecting stainless steel. As a result of the bending, transformed reflections of the environment can be seen as well as motion on the bridge. The arch literally as well as figuratively gives the environment a new perspective.
