HEK screw piles

The HEK screw pile is an in-ground formed and fully soil-displacing screw pile, used in projects where vibration-free and/or low-noise production is required for the surrounding environment.

Application

  • HEK screw piles are particularly suitable for the foundation of projects in built-up areas or where excavated soil or vibrations are undesirable.
  • Ideal for urban projects, infrastructure, and the energy sector, including wind turbines.

Features

  • Adjustments in pile specifications possible up to just before the start of the work and sometimes even during the work.
  • Capable of absorbing both relatively high compressive and tensile loads.
  • Soil-displacing, resulting in negligible excavated soil.
  • The pile system is installed vibration-free and with low noise through screwing.
  • HEK screw piles can be reinforced along the entire length with a cage and can therefore absorb both relatively high compressive and tensile loads.
  • Can be finished slightly above the working level.

The HEK screw pile can be executed in various variants; with grout injection or as a combined screwed tubular pile. The system uses a smooth steel drilling tube, equipped with a detachable screw point. A drilling motor screws it to depth, after which the reinforcement and concrete are introduced. The drilling tube is then extracted, leaving the screw point in the ground. The pile can then be reinforced over its full length. Depending on the foundation machine and soil conditions, a pile length of up to 48 meters is achievable. The system creates a high load-bearing capacity.

Special Aspects

For each soil condition, Vroom Funderingstechnieken can advise on the application of the HEK screw pile and which type is suitable. HEK-combi-screw piles, equipped with a prefabricated concrete core, are particularly suitable for underground parking garages, tunnels, and basement constructions, which need to be produced deeper from a higher level. See also product description. HEK casing piles are comparable to the screwed steel pipe pile in the mini-segment. In this case, both the screw point and the casing remain in the ground.

Control During Production

Thanks to the registration of rotation moment, pull-down force, and drilling time, the operator has up-to-date information about the made pile and can therefore notice deviations in the soil and anticipate them. The drilling moment, insertion speed, and scraping factor serve as indicators for following the sounding. Control of water ingress in the screw tube during screwing is done using a plumb line or stone.

Control After Production

Thanks to its own quality control, quick responses are possible. If there is doubt about the quality of the pile and/or at the request of the client concerning the execution, HEK screw piles manufactured by Vroom Funderingstechnieken can be acoustically measured and then assessed by an independent advisory bureau.

Control of concrete quality is done by drilling and testing concrete from the core of the pile.

Vroom Funderingstechnieken manufactures HEK screw piles according to its own execution procedure established as part of internal quality control and nationally applicable standards. Concrete (and grout) for the HEK screw piles is sourced from certified concrete plants.

Technical data

General

  • Sealing tape keeps the tube clean and dry during the screwing of the HEK screw pile.
  • Batter positions up to 1:3 depending on the situation and pile length.
  • Available auxiliary equipment: concrete pump, shovel, and bucket.
  • Machine noise level approximately 90 dB. The system is considered low-vibration to vibration-free.

Drilling Installation

  • Continuously adjustable and dependent on the drilling motor.
  • Rotational torque 250 to 500 kNm.
  • Pull down force 150 to 400 kN.

Grout Injection

HEK screw piles can be executed with grout injection if it is structurally required or necessary for the execution.

Concrete Quality

C20/25, C25/30, C30/37, and C35/45 quality.

Reinforcement

It is possible to reinforce the pile along its full length, and the reinforcement can also be suspended deeper.

Bearing Capacity

Geotechnical bearing capacity according to Eurocode 7 (NEN 6743).

The screw tip is a welded constructed point adapted to geotechnical conditions. In some cases, the tip is executed in a cast form. The ratio of the footplate/shaft is optimized to Dfoot < √1.5 x Dshaft.

The bearing capacity factors to be applied according to Eurocode 2, Eurocode 7 (NEN-EN 12699) as pile tip level applies to the bottom of the screw tube.

Pile Tip Bearing Capacity Factor

αp = 0.63
β= 1.0 (Dfoot < √1.5 x Dshaft)
S = 1.0

Shaft Friction for Pressure Piles

αs = 0.009 (When using grout injection αs = 0.009)

Shaft Friction for Tension Piles

αt = 0.009 (When using grout injection αt = 0.009)

Load-Deformation Behavior

In accordance with Eurocode 7 (NEN 6743, type 1, figure 6 and 7)

Loading Spectrum

Depending on the diameter and soil condition, tension and compression loads can be specified

Structural Aspects

Available screw tube diameters shaft, tip diameter in mm:

  • 380 (450)
  • 410 (500)
  • 460 (560)
  • 540 (680)

Other diameters on request.

Maximum pile length approximately 48 meters, depending on the pile diameter and soil condition. High pile lengths are investigated on request.

Manufacturing

  1. Positioning of the steel auxiliary tube above the screw point that is placed at the ground level in the correct position.
  2. The hydraulic drilling installation, in combination with the pull-down force, screws the auxiliary tube to the desired depth.
  3. Reinforcement is introduced when the auxiliary tube reaches depth.
  4. Concrete mix is poured into the auxiliary tube using a concrete pump or bucket.
  5. The auxiliary tube is oscillated or screwed out, leaving the screw point behind.
  6. Finishing the pile and moving the machine to the next position.
