Driven steel casing piles

Driven steel tubular piles are cast-in-situ (concrete) piles that are made of steel tubular segments. This pile is often deployed for home extensions, renovations and foundation repair. Driving the vibration arm into the tube is the most common approach. The low-vibration process, with or without grout, and screw injection piles are described separately.

It happens more and more often that this segment of foundation piles is used for private commissioning projects. Steel tubular piles are used on locations that have limited working space or working height and for projects for which a low vibration level is required. The steel tube is equipped with a reinforcement basket and concrete.


  • The bearing capacity factors are calculated according to the terms of Eurocode 7 (NEN standards).
  • Tamping in the tube requires little energy from the direct impact pressure transmitted to the point of the pile due to the slight mass of the pile being tamped, so this can be viewed as a low-vibration technique.
  • The pile system displaces all subsoil.
  • The technique can be performed where there is limited headroom using small, light-weight, manoeuvrable foundation devices.
  • The tamping depth depends on the nature of the load-bearing substrate.
  • The tamping depth is monitored by means of blow-counting.
  • Quick delivery and adjustments to pile specifications can be made up to shortly  before the start of work.
  • Raking piles can also be installed to a certain extent.
  • Steel tube piles may be subjected to both compression and tensile forces.
  • Under certain circumstances the piles can be finished to the appropriate height.
  • Piles can be reinforced across the entire length. Spacers ensure that the reinforcement offers sufficient cover.
  • Tube sections can be welded together using a flare/flange or a ring and a fillet weld.
  • The use of steel tube piles is a way of creating foundations that is quick and can be used flexibly in combination with the appropriate mini piledriver on both small-scale projects and parts of larger-scale projects. For instance in situations in which the original foundations are already in place, but a few extra piles are required.

The tubular piles are pressed into the ground using jacks that are anchored to the structural concrete floor, which bears the weight of the entire building. If a fixed foot has been welded to the first tube segment, the pile system will be entirely vibration-free. If a separate foot is used, then a concrete foot can be pulled up to give extra bearing capacity.

Mini piledrivers are all-rounders

Our mini piledrivers have specifically been developed to install steel-tube piles for restoration and renovation projects. Some mini piledrivers are so compact that they can be driven through the front door and require little in the way of clearance and room for manoeuvre to be able to install foundation piles. In addition to steel-tube piles, the mini piledrivers can also be used with other pile systems. For instance with concrete screw piles, CFA piles, timber piles and pre-fab concrete piles. And these combinations can be used for extensions and internal piling work for industrial flooring, for example, where there is at least 6 metres’ clearance.

COVO steel tubular pile

Steel tube piles with a strengthened/reinforced foot (COVO type) deliver greater bearing capacity when using a smaller pile shaft diameter. Use depends on foundations and available working height.

Concrete grade

Grades C20/25, C25/30 and C30/37.


B500B grade. Dimensioning is based on information supplied by the designer.

Bearing capacity

The geotechnical bearing capacity as per Eurocode 7 (NEN 6743) gives the following parameters:

Pile base coefficient

αp = 1.0.
β = 0.8 - 0.9 - 1.0 (depending on base plate).

Shaft friction coefficient

αs = 0.010.
Traction αt = 0.007.

Production preocess diven steel tubular piles 

  1. Start of first section of steel tube pile with welded foot and gravel on the foot. 
  2. Pile-driving process: internal driving of sections of steel tube pile to ground level. 
  3. Sections of steel tube pile are welded in the flare/flange before being driven into the ground. 
  4. Steel tube cutting with burner: check that the steel tube pile is dry and free of pollutants. 
  5. Injection of concrete filling. 
  6. Injection of reinforcement up to +3 m and finish to appropriate height.
