De Eekhoorn in Zwaagdijk

10000 m2 floor space 2984 piles

3,000 vibrated SD piles are being installed for a production hall and two canopies, part of a newbuild project for De Eekhoorn in Zwaagdijk.

The formed in-situ, soil displacing vibrated-SD (Small Diameters) pile is being used here under the floor of the new production hall. In this project, too, the combination of pile and floor has resulted in an economically-viable design. The vibrated-SD piles can be installed with a very high production speed.

Glory days

Furniture manufacturer De Eekhoorn Dutch Furniture, known for brands such as Basiclabel and WOOOD, has commissioned a newbuild project next to its factory in Zwaagdijk-Oost, and is expanding its warehouse and Experience Centre. These are turbulent but, above all, successful times for the manufacturer, which has seen unprecedented growth in recent years. Its brands WOOOD, BePureHome and vtwonen are already for sale at more than 1500 retailers in Europe. “The trick is to capitalise on the fluctuating market. After all, success depends on the fact that you can switch over quickly. At De Eekhoorn, we have cultivated a culture in which we see each change as a challenge", summarises Jos de Smit, Commercial Director, the philosophy behind the business.

The head office, Experience Centre and warehouses can be found in Hoorn. “It's only been two years, and things here are bursting at the seams", sighs Jos. “We weren't expecting that when we conjured up our spacious plans four years ago; a building with a volume of 190,000 m3. Yet, here we are building another 2300 m2 of warehouse floor space on the adjacent plot, in a building that'll be as high as the current one: 16.5 metres. We'll also be renting more space, elsewhere in the region, where we can store non-stackable products. We'll keep doing that.”

At the other site, in Zwaagdijk-Oost, where the production facility is, De Eekhoorn has bought up the business next door, a company that makes pallets. “If the neighbours are up for sale, you have to grab that opportunity. Generally, that's something that happens only once. Three years ago, we had the old pallet factory demolished. On this plot, all 15,000 m2 of it, we've now started on construction. With this extension of the factory, we're doubling our production and storage space.”
