Oostenburgereiland, Plot 6

180 dwellings250 piles

In Amsterdam, we are making DPA-PLUS screw piles for the Oostenburgereiland Plot 6 development, comprising dwellings for starters and the elderly, and commercial spaces.

This plot, on Oostenburgermiddenstraat, will accommodate 150 dwellings available for young people to rent, 30 for the elderly, and commercial premises incorporating fitness and recreation areas. These premises will be split between a residential tower block and two smaller (partly residential) buildings. In the building for elderly residents, two of the dwellings will act as the ‘eyes on the street’.

The DPA PLUS screw pile is a cast-in-situ screw pile system in which soil is displaced. In other words, hardly any of the soil into which the pile is drilled comes to the surface. The lining tube is drilled into the ground with the minimum of vibration, so there is little excess noise. DPA-PLUS screw piles can be produced in large lengths. This system also absorbs both compressive and tensile forces, and has a high load-bearing capacity.

The 250 DPA-PLUS screw piles for this project are between 22 and 25 metres long.

Historic spot

Plot 6 occupies a historic spot. Long before Werkspoor established itself on the island, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the owner of the island, building its vessels there from 1661. In those days, the VOC had six shipyards in the Netherlands, but the one on Oostenburg was the largest by far. More than half of the VOC fleet was built on the island, in the swampy ground on the banks of the IJ. Each year, the shipyard on Oostenburg built three East Indiamen. Plot 6 lies approximately where vessels under construction lay in the dock, the place where tsar Peter the Great did his ‘apprenticeship’ over four months in 1697.

Oosterburgereiland was later the working area of the rail Werkspoorhallen and various industrial shipyards, which led to substantial soil contamination. This soil has since been remediated. This project will soon stand on piles installed in clean ground.
