Driven steel casing piles

Driven steel casing piles are cast-in-situ (concrete) piles constructed from steel tube segments. This pile type is frequently applied for extensions, refurbishment works and foundation remediation projects. Low-vibration internal driving is the most commonly used installation method. Vibration-free screwing techniques, with or without grout, as well as screw injection piles, are described separately.

This piling system can also be installed using mini foundation rigs on sites with restricted working space or limited headroom, such as refurbishment projects, extensions and foundation repair works. In such cases, the steel tube is assembled from smaller tube sections, which are welded together during installation. The available headroom determines the length of the tube sections that can be screwed into the ground.

Piling equipment

All piling rigs are equipped with a continuously adjustable hydraulic hammer with a maximum driving energy ranging from 40 to 150 kNm.

  • Hydraulic IHC SC40, SC50, S70, S90, S120, S150

The IHC S150 hammer is particularly suitable for heavy-duty piling works.
All hammer systems are fully enclosed, enabling Vroom Funderingstechnieken to carry out piling operations in a clean and environmentally responsible manner.

Concrete quality

Available in C20/25, C25/30, C30/37 and C35/45 grades.

Reinforcement

B500B grade. The longitudinal reinforcement is designed by the structural engineer based on the applicable load data.
Spiral reinforcement provides a significantly stiffer reinforcement cage.

Bearing capacity

The geotechnical bearing capacity in accordance with Eurocode 7 (NEN 6743) provides the following pile class factors.

Pile base bearing capacity factor

αp = 0.70
β = 0.8 – 0.9 – 1.0 (depending on the base plate).

Shaft friction factor

αs = 0.010
Tension αt = 0.007

Load and deformation behaviour

In accordance with displacement pile behaviour.

Where required, the tubes can also be driven without a base plate in larger diameters.

Manufacturing process

  1. Steel drive tube fitted with a base plate at working level.
  2. Driving the steel tube to the required depth using the appropriate hammer.
  3. Optional trimming to the required level.
  4. Inspection to ensure the tube is dry and free from contamination; suspension of reinforcement fitted with spacers.
  5. Filling with concrete grout; the casing remains in place.
  6. Completed.
